hi dom, is it possbile to use a glass paper instead of gel? My SB400 isn’t powerful as SB900, i am confuse about will it also melt if full power all the time?
Cheers
Thanks for posting this – I will never use gels on my SB-900 after seeing this. My cellophane ‘gels’ work ok at full power on my SB-24, which is about 70% the power of an SB-900, I believe.
filters vary by their heat resistance. I don’t have the experience myself. quote from Lee-filters website “Polyester Filters 180°C, High Temperature (HT) Filters 220°C and Glass Dichroic Filters 371°C”
I discovered it the hard way, as my sigma 530DG S has no heat cut off heated up and melted lightly it’s own diffuser. You should leave some space between the filter and the flash to let the heat escape
light stands are the least brand important instrument. i have no idea what mine are i went into a shop asked for something cheep and was given a black piece of metal with legs and a bit on the top. stands are not like tripods where brand may be important, Tripods being around £200 stand can be about £30, the price ofa parking ticket.
I didnt use the pull out difuser but i think i ill fromm now on as i can use the difuser as well as the cover for the gell but then i cant do zoom?! so that sucks.
no need to cut i dont think. just shove it in there
Ohh i just thought maybe it might have not melted if you had it zoomed a bit more, because you know how the flash tube moves back as you zoom? Maybe it melted because the flash tube and the gel were basically touching..
I was JUST about to ask you about this… but when I turned on the computer I was greeted with this video.
I believe I bought the same exact gel set (I see why they include multiples) as you and I was playing with them with my SB-600. It’s lower power than the 900, but still on 1/1…
Do you use the pull out diffuser with it? For me it helps a bit. And since the head on my flash is smaller than the gels, I was planning on cutting the gels to fit and hug my sto-fen
@dombower Oh Excuse me for asking, i was just curious because i have watched all your other videos but couldnt seem to pick up a model or name. But thanks for the help..
but I suppose in the longrun, It will make it cheaper for me since the 580 EXII can act as a master flash to control slaves (430 ex)
Your next video should be about what flashes to buy
I have the canon 580 EX II (equivillent of the sb-900)
I do not recommend flashing this into peoples eyes, I done it to myself on 1/1 power, needless to say, my eyesight wasn’t working for 2 hours (had the little square and colours showing up)
I wish I researched a tad more, Instead of buying the 580 ex II since I am new to flash, I could have bought 3 simple flashes for about £200 (jessops one at £60)
I’m using gels quite a lot in front of my sb-800s and 900s…just make sure to get high quality deep-dyed gels and the melting effect will be much smaller…anyway I’ve found out it’s normal, gels keep working even if melted and the darker they are, the easier they melt so keep it in mind. bye, thanks for the videos
I have done this on my SB800!, I made my own gels from cutting some out from colored plastic sheets from the craft store. They are thicker then the Nikon version and so far I have not melted one. you should try to make your own

the 580ex2 is as powerfull and i was using it at full power for an hour or more and never ever melted a gel (rosco gel)
The SB900 has a reputation for overheating. If the thermal cutout is turned off the warranty is void, (so I hear via a mate and a Nikon service guy)
I actually noticed the creassing of your red gel in the latter part of the dog/rabbit hole video..
